Napoleon I, c1810, (1896)

Napoleon I, c1810, (1896). Napoleon I Bonaparte (1769-1821), Emperor of France from 1804, depicted as Caesar with laurel wreath. Napoleon enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army. In 1799 he led a coup to overthrow the government, the Directory, and became first consul and effective dictator of France. In 1804, he declared himself Emperor, and embarked on a series of military campaigns across Europe, the Napoleonic Wars. Victories such as Austerlitz and Jena led to France establishing its power across much of the continent. In 1812, however, Napoleon embarked on a disastrous invasion of Russia and defeat at Leipzig in 1813 led to his abdication and exile to Elba. He ecaped in 1815, raised another army, but was finally defeated by Wellington at Waterloo, and exiled again to the remote island of St Helena where he died. Photograph of the bust by Chaudet, after Napoleons death mask. The bust marks the place where stood the bed on which Napoleon died. From Life of Napoleon Bonaparte, Volume IV, by William Milligan Sloane. [The Century Co. New York, 1896]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Napoleon I Bonaparte, Emperor of France from 1804, in all his regal glory. Taken around 1810 and reproduced in 1896, the image showcases Napoleon as a formidable leader, reminiscent of Caesar himself with a laurel wreath adorning his head. Napoleon's remarkable ascent to power began within the French Revolutionary army. In 1799, he orchestrated a coup that toppled the Directory government and assumed control as the first consul of France. From there, he swiftly declared himself Emperor in 1804 and embarked on an ambitious series of military campaigns known as the Napoleonic Wars. His victories at Austerlitz and Jena solidified France's dominance across much of Europe during this time. However, fate took a turn when Napoleon suffered defeat during his ill-fated invasion of Russia in 1812. The Battle of Leipzig in 1813 forced him to abdicate and endure exile on Elba. Yet even after escaping Elba in 1815 and rallying another army, Napoleon faced ultimate defeat at Waterloo against Wellington's forces. This marked his final downfall before being exiled once more to the remote island of St Helena where he ultimately passed away. The photograph itself is based on a bust created by Chaudet using Napoleon's death mask as reference. It holds historical significance as it marks the spot where Napoleon drew his last breath - standing beside the bed upon which he died. Preserved through time, this evocative image offers us a glimpse into one of history's most influential figures - an enigmatic ruler whose legacy continues to captivate minds centuries later.
