Louis Philippe I, King of France, 19th century. Artist: W Alais
Louis Philippe I, King of France, 19th century. Louis Philippe (1773-1850) was proclaimed king in 1830 after the overthrow of the repressive regime of Charles X by the July Revolution. Ruling as King of the French rather than of France, he attempted to establish a monarchy more in touch with the people than previously. Louis Philippes rule was initially popular, but his regime increasingly came to be regarded as conservative and favouring the wealthy. In 1848 the people revolted again and Louis Philippe abdicated and fled to England. His overthrow brought an end to the monarchy in France

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the regal presence of Louis Philippe I, King of France, during the 19th century. Painted by the talented artist W Alais, this portrait showcases Louis Philippe's dignified stature and commanding gaze. Louis Philippe ascended to the throne in 1830 after the oppressive rule of Charles X was overthrown by the July Revolution. Unlike his predecessors, he sought to establish a monarchy that connected more closely with its people. Initially popular among the masses, his regime gradually became associated with conservatism and favoritism towards the wealthy. The year 1848 marked a turning point as revolution swept through France once again. In response to mounting discontentment, Louis Philippe abdicated his throne and sought refuge in England. This event signaled an end to monarchy in France. Francois Pascal Simon Gerard skillfully captured Louis Philippe's likeness in this engraving, showcasing not only his physical features but also conveying a sense of power and authority befitting a monarch. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and timelessness to this historical piece. As we admire this print today, it serves as a reminder of both political upheaval and royal legacy that shaped French history during the 19th century. It stands as a testament to Louis Philippe's reign - one that began with promise but ultimately succumbed to revolutionary forces demanding change for their nation.
