EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Hospital Orderlies of the 1st Royal Munster Fusiliers in Rangoon, Burma, back in 1913. The Royal Munster Fusiliers were a distinguished infantry regiment within the British Army, primarily stationed in Ireland with their home depot located in Tralee. This particular regiment was formed by merging two regiments from the former East India Company in 1881. Throughout their history, they served not only in India but also played a vital role during World War I. However, after the establishment of the independent Irish Free State in 1922, all five regiments associated with this region were disbanded. In this monochrome portrait captured over a century ago, we see a group of Caucasian men dressed uniformly as hospital orderlies. Their solemn expressions and purposeful stance reflect their dedication to caring for wounded soldiers during times of conflict. The image provides us with a glimpse into an era when Burma (now known as Myanmar) was under British rule and serves as a reminder of the far-reaching impact that war had on different parts of Asia. It is an important historical document that sheds light on both military and colonial history. Preserved within an album titled "1st Royal Munster Fusillers, Rangoon, 1913" this photograph offers us insight into a specific moment frozen in time – capturing not just individuals but also representing larger concepts such as duty and sacrifice.
