From The Great Pyramid. (A Bird s-Eye View of The Canal and Its Consequences. ), 1869. Artist: Joseph Swain

From The Great Pyramid. (A Bird s-Eye View of The Canal and Its Consequences.), 1869. In November 1869 the Suez Canal was formally opened. Napoleon IIIs Empress, Eugenie, attended, as did the Austrian Emperor, the Crown Prince of Prussia, Prince William of Orange and many others. Punch however seems to share the misgivings felt by the late Lord Palmerston as to the potential political problems that may be caused by the Suez Canal. France claims success for the project, which linked the Mediterranean with the Red Sea. Britannia, with some foresight, points back towards France and Egypt, concerned at the possibility of friction between the two nations. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 27, 1869

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century print titled "From The Great Pyramid. (A Bird s-Eye View of The Canal and Its Consequences. ), 1869" captures a significant moment in history - the formal opening of the Suez Canal. In attendance were notable figures such as Empress Eugenie de Montijo, the Austrian Emperor, and Prince William of Orange. However, this satirical cartoon from Punch magazine suggests that not everyone shared in the celebration. The artist Joseph Swain portrays Britannia, symbolizing Britain's interests, pointing back towards France and Egypt with concern. This gesture signifies her apprehension about potential political problems arising from the canal's construction. Lord Palmerston's misgivings are echoed here. The image features various allegorical figures and symbols representing different nations involved in this monumental project. A camel represents Egypt while Britannia holds a telescope to observe any possible friction between France and Egypt. Through clever satire, this engraving highlights the tensions surrounding this engineering marvel that linked the Mediterranean with the Red Sea. It serves as a reminder that progress can bring both benefits and challenges on an international scale. Overall, this historical print offers us a glimpse into how people perceived major geopolitical events during that time period. It reminds us that even grand achievements like the Suez Canal can have far-reaching consequences beyond mere transportation infrastructure.
