Edward the Confessor and Alfred the Great, English kings, 19th century
Edward the Confessor and Alfred the Great, English kings, 19th century. Alfred became King of Wessex in 871. Much of his reign was taken up with the struggle against the Danish invaders. After Alfred defeated them at Edington, Wiltshire, in 878, England was divided in half, with the south-western part in the hands of the Saxons, and the north-eastern portion, the Danelaw, administered by the Danes. War broke out again in the 890s, but by 897 the Danes had been defeated. Edward the Confessor was King of England from 1042-1066. A dispute over his succession between Harold Godwinson and William of Normandy led to the Norman Conquest of England. Plate 7 from The History of the Nations

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century print showcases the esteemed English kings, Edward the Confessor and Alfred the Great. Both rulers played significant roles in shaping England's history during different centuries. Alfred the Great ascended to the throne of Wessex in 871, embarking on a relentless struggle against Danish invaders who threatened England's sovereignty. His resounding victory at Edington in 878 divided England into two regions: the south-western part under Saxon control and the north-eastern portion known as Danelaw, administered by Danes. Although war erupted again in the 890s, Alfred emerged triumphant by 897. Edward the Confessor reigned over England from 1042 to his untimely demise in 1066. However, his reign was marred by a succession dispute between Harold Godwinson and William of Normandy that ultimately led to one of history's most pivotal events – The Norman Conquest of England. Plate seven from "The History of Nations" immortalizes these revered monarchs through an exquisite aquatint technique. Their regal portraits exude power and wisdom, adorned with ermine fur-trimmed robes befitting their royal status. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork today, it serves as a reminder of how these influential figures shaped British history through their leadership and unwavering dedication to their people. This print is not just an artistic masterpiece but also a testament to our rich heritage and legacy that continues to inspire generations across time.
