Dr Johnson, English man of letters, c1780

Dr Johnson, English man of letters, c1780. A critic, lexicographer, essayist, biographer and poet, Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was one of the oustanding personalities of 18th century Britain. In 1755 he published his Dictionary of the English Language, regarded as the first great English dictionary, which took him 8 years to compile. Noted as a wit and conversationalist, Johnson founded the Literary Club in c1763, which numbered David Garrick, Edmund Burke, Oliver Goldsmith and Joshua Reynolds amongst its distinguished membership. Much of his fame derives from his highly popular biography, Life of Johnson, written by his friend and contemporary, James Boswell. From Garnett & Gooses History of English Literature

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Dr Samuel Johnson, an eminent English man of letters from the late 18th century. Known for his diverse talents as a critic, lexicographer, essayist, biographer, and poet, Johnson was a towering figure in British literature. His most notable achievement was the publication of his groundbreaking Dictionary of the English Language in 1755 after eight years of meticulous compilation. Beyond his scholarly pursuits, Johnson's wit and conversational skills made him a beloved figure among his contemporaries. In fact, he founded the Literary Club in the mid-1760s which boasted esteemed members such as David Garrick, Edmund Burke, Oliver Goldsmith, and Joshua Reynolds. However, it is perhaps through James Boswell's acclaimed biography titled "Life of Johnson" that Dr Samuel Johnson achieved lasting fame. Boswell's intimate portrayal shed light on both the brilliance and complexities of this remarkable man. In this black-and-white portrait engraving captured by an unknown creator from Garnett & Gooses History of English Literature collection (courtesy: Ann Ronan Pictures), we witness Dr Samuel Johnson's commanding presence. Dressed impeccably with an air of intellectual authority about him; he epitomizes the quintessential Georgian gentleman. This print serves as a timeless tribute to one of Britain's greatest literary figures whose contributions continue to shape our understanding and appreciation for language and literature today.
