Carpet sweeper, c1900s
Carpet sweeper, c1900s. A startled insect hurries to escape from a woman using a carpet sweeper, which the insect has confused with an automobile. This type of carpet sweeper was invented by Melville and Anna Bissell in 1876. As it is pushed along, the wheels of the carpet sweeper rotate a brush underneath. This dislodges the dirt from the carpet and sweeps it inside. The Bissells went on to build a factory in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the US in 1883. Their sweeper was introduced into Britain in 1887. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the early 1900s, we witness a comical encounter between an insect and a woman using a carpet sweeper. The startled insect scurries to escape from what it mistakenly perceives as an approaching automobile. Little does it know that this ingenious invention is actually a carpet sweeper, designed by Melville and Anna Bissell in 1876. As the woman pushes the carpet sweeper along, its wheels rotate a brush underneath, effectively dislodging dirt from the carpet and sweeping it inside. This revolutionary cleaning device not only brought convenience to households but also paved the way for improved health and hygiene standards. The Bissells' groundbreaking creation was met with great success, leading them to establish their own factory in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1883. Their innovative sweeper soon made its way across the Atlantic into Britain by 1887. This delightful engraving captures not only the surprise of our tiny insect friend but also showcases how advancements in science and domestic equipment have shaped our lives throughout history. It serves as a reminder of human ingenuity and our constant pursuit of making everyday tasks easier. With its charming cartoon-like depiction, this vintage print transports us back to a simpler time when even insects could be fooled by remarkable inventions like the Bissells' carpet sweeper.
