Captain Scotts Last Birthday Dinner, 6 Jun 1911, (1913). Celebrating expedition leader Robert F Scotts 43rd birthday, left to right: Atkinson, Meares, Cherry-Garrard, Oates (standing), Taylor, Nelson, Evans, Scott, Wilson, Simpson, Bowers, Gran (standing), Wright, Debenham, Day. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Captain Scott's Last Birthday Dinner, 6 Jun 1911
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a poignant snapshot of camaraderie and determination amidst the harsh Antarctic landscape. In this print by Herbert Ponting, we witness the celebration of expedition leader Robert F Scott's 43rd birthday during the Terra Nova Expedition. Gathered around a makeshift table adorned with simple decorations, these brave men come together to honor their esteemed captain. From left to right, we see Atkinson, Meares, Cherry-Garrard, Oates (standing), Taylor, Nelson, Evans, Scott himself at the center of it all. They are joined by Wilson, Simpson, Bowers and Gran (standing), Wright Debenham and Day. This image encapsulates both the scientific ambition that drove this British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) and the indomitable spirit that characterized Captain Scott's quest for exploration. The diverse expertise within this team - geologist to physicist - highlights their shared commitment to advancing knowledge in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments. Tragically though they reached their ultimate goal on January 17th in 1912 after enduring countless hardships along their journey towards the South Pole; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already triumphed over them by a month. Plagued by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey led to devastating consequences as Scott and his remaining crew perished in late March. The discovery of their bodies eight months later only deepened our understanding of their heroic struggle against nature's forces. "Captain Scott's Last Birthday Dinner" serves as an enduring testament not just to these remarkable individuals but also to humanity’s unyielding pursuit of knowledge through exploration.
