Bust of Augustus, first half of 1st century BC

Bust of Augustus, first half of 1st century BC. Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (63 BC-14 AD) became one of a triumvirate of rulers after the death in 44 BC of Julius Caesar, his great-uncle, whose dictatorship had brought an end to the Roman republic. He became sole ruler in 31 BC after defeating Mark Anthony at the Battle of Actium, and in 27 BC proclaimed himself Emperor, adopting the title Caesar Augustus. Octavians rule, which lasted until 14 AD, ended a century of civil strife and was a period of peace and prosperity in which Rome attained the height of its imperial power. Found in the collection of The Hermitage, St Petersburg

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Bust of Augustus, a remarkable piece from the first half of the 1st century BC. Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, also known as Augustus, played a pivotal role in Roman history. After his great-uncle Julius Caesar's demise in 44 BC, he became one of three rulers in a triumvirate. However, it was not until his victory over Mark Anthony at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC that he assumed sole power and declared himself Emperor. Augustus' reign lasted until 14 AD and brought an end to a tumultuous century marked by civil unrest within Rome. Under his leadership, peace and prosperity flourished throughout the empire, allowing Rome to reach its zenith of imperial power. The bust itself is an exquisite example of Roman sculpture. Carved from marble with meticulous attention to detail, it captures Augustus' regal countenance and commanding presence. The artist skillfully portrays both strength and wisdom through delicate facial features and intricate hair carving. Now housed within The Hermitage collection in St Petersburg, this artwork serves as a testament to Augustus' enduring legacy as one of Rome's most influential leaders. It symbolizes not only his individual greatness but also represents an era characterized by stability and cultural advancement. As we gaze upon this magnificent bust today, we are transported back to ancient times when emperors ruled with authority and artistry flourished under their patronage.
