EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of telecommunications. Taken in 1881, it showcases the Ader telephone system, an innovation by French engineer Clement Ader that revolutionized communication during the late 19th century. In this image, we see a man on the left making a call using the Ader telephone system. His voice travels through wires to reach an operator at the exchange located in the center of the frame. From there, his message is transmitted to its intended recipient on the right side of the photograph. This early telecommunication network developed by Ader was instrumental in connecting people across Paris. Clement Ader's contributions extended beyond telephony; he was also a visionary pioneer of powered flight. In fact, seven years before the Wright Brothers' historic achievement, Ader successfully designed an aeroplane that made a short flight covering 300 yards in 1897. This remarkable print not only highlights Ader's ingenuity but also serves as a testament to France's rich history of scientific and technological advancements. It symbolizes both innovation and progress within communications during this era. Preserved by Oxford Science Archive and brought back to life by Heritage Images, this monochrome engraving offers us glimpses into an extraordinary period when ideas were transforming our world at an unprecedented pace.
