Ross Errilly Friary
Ross Abbey, Headford, County Galway, IrelandThe Ross Errilly Friary is a medieval Franciscan friary located about a mile to the northwest of Headford, County Galway, Ireland. It is a National Monument of Ireland and among the best-preserved medieval monastic sites in the country. Though usually referred to by locals as " Ross Abbey, " this is not technically correct as the community never had an abbot.Like many other abandoned Christian sites in Ireland, Ross Errilly has continued to be used as a burial ground by area residents. In addition to tombs that date from the friarys active period, many graves dating from the 18th through 20th centuries can be found inside the church walls. In some cases, tombstones comprise the floors of walkways and crawlspaces

This print captures the timeless beauty of Ross Errilly Friary, also known as Ross Abbey, located in Headford, County Galway, Ireland. As a medieval Franciscan friary and a National Monument of Ireland, this site holds immense historical significance and is one of the best-preserved monastic sites in the country. Contrary to its local name, Ross Errilly was never an abbey but rather a community without an abbot. Nevertheless, it remains deeply cherished by both locals and visitors alike. The friary's rich history can be felt within its walls as it continues to serve as a final resting place for many area residents throughout the centuries. Walking through this sacred space reveals not only tombs dating back to its active period but also graves from the 18th to 20th centuries nestled within the church walls.
