EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Major (Brevet Lt-Col) James John Hugonin, a distinguished officer of the 4th Light Dragoons, alongside his black trumpeter and two troopers. Painted by James Pardon around 1820, this oil on canvas masterpiece is now housed in the National Army Museum in London. Major Hugonin's impressive military career spanned several decades. He began as a cornet in the 4th Dragoons in 1795 and swiftly rose through the ranks to become Lieutenant that same year. With unwavering dedication and skill, he became a captain in 1803 and was later promoted to major in 1811. In recognition of his exceptional leadership during the battle of Toulouse, where he commanded the regiment when Lt-Col Dalbiac was absent, Major Hugonin received the prestigious Army Gold Medal. The artist skillfully portrays their uniforms and equipment, providing us with a glimpse into British military attire during this era. After retiring from active service in 1821, Major James John Hugonin lived out his days at Nursted House near Petersfield until his passing on January 30th, 1854.
