EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Wych Street in 1876, a bustling cityscape frozen in time. The image, taken by Alfred and John Bool, is part of a series commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London. These photographs aimed to document buildings at risk of demolition, preserving their memory before they made way for progress. Wych Street itself was an eclectic mix of architectural styles from different eras. The dilapidated facades showcased elements ranging from Jacobean to Georgian influences, creating a unique visual tapestry. Despite its ramshackle appearance, the street exuded a certain charm that only age can bestow. The photograph reveals rows of shops with Victorian-era windows lining both sides of the street. A prominent spire rises above the rooftops, adding verticality to the composition. This juxtaposition between old and new is emblematic of London's ever-evolving urban landscape. Sadly, Wych Street eventually met its demise as it was demolished to make way for the construction of Aldwych. However, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of what once stood proudly in this location. Now preserved within a private collection and out-of-copyright status allows us all to appreciate this piece capturing 17th-century architecture amidst an evolving cityscape. It stands as testament not only to the skillful artistry behind early photography but also as a window into London's rich history.
