Englands Chris Oti - 1988 Five Nations

Rugby Union - 1988 Five Nations Championship - England 35 Ireland 3
Englands Chris Oti, scorer of three tries during the game at Twickenham.
Prior to this game England had scored just one try at Twickenham in the previous two years. They were trailing 0-3 at half-time, however they then ran in six second-half tries, and as Oti completed his hat-trick a group from the Benedictine Douai school began to sing their own first XV anthem, " Swing Low Sweet Chariot". It has remained a Twickenham and England rugby standard from that point on

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in English rugby history during the 1988 Five Nations Championship. England's Chris Oti, a name that will forever be etched in rugby folklore, is seen here celebrating his remarkable achievement of scoring three tries against Ireland at Twickenham. Leading up to this game, England had struggled to find their attacking prowess on home soil, managing just one try in the previous two years. However, everything changed in the second half of this encounter. Trailing 0-3 at halftime, England unleashed an unstoppable offensive onslaught and ran in an impressive six tries. As Oti completed his hat-trick with sheer determination and skill, a group from the Benedictine Douai school began singing their own first XV anthem - "Swing Low Sweet Chariot". Little did they know that this spontaneous act would become synonymous with both Twickenham Stadium and English rugby thereafter. This iconic photograph not only immortalizes Oti's incredible performance but also symbolizes the turning point for English rugby at Twickenham. It serves as a reminder of how passion and resilience can transform fortunes within a single match. Colorsport Images has masterfully captured this unforgettable moment that continues to inspire generations of rugby enthusiasts worldwide.
