Charles Lyell, caricature
Charles Lyell (1797-1875). Caricature of the British geologist Charles Lyell, showing him with a large jaw, and bushy hair and sideburns. Lyell was appointed secretary of the Geological Society in 1823. Between 1830-33 he published his three-volume masterpiece Principles of Geology. In it, he provided proof to support the principle of Uniformitarianism stated by James Hutton. This principle stated that rocks and geological formations are the result of ordinary slow processes such as erosion and not a past catastrophe. A friend of Darwin, Lyell wrote The Antiquity of Man (1863), but himself denied that evolution could be applied to humans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Charles Lyell, a prominent British geologist of the 19th century. With his distinctive large jaw, bushy hair, and sideburns, this caricature perfectly portrays Lyell's unique appearance. Lyell's contributions to the field of geology were groundbreaking. As secretary of the Geological Society in 1823, he played a crucial role in advancing scientific knowledge about rocks and geological formations. His three-volume masterpiece "Principles of Geology" published between 1830-33, provided compelling evidence supporting James Hutton's principle of Uniformitarianism. Uniformitarianism posits that geological processes occur gradually over time rather than being caused by catastrophic events. Lyell's work demonstrated that ordinary slow processes like erosion shape our planet's landscape. Interestingly, Charles Lyell was also a close friend of Charles Darwin. While he wrote extensively on various topics related to natural history and evolution, including "The Antiquity of Man" in 1863, he himself did not believe that evolution could be applied to humans. This comical yet historically significant artwork showcases the brilliance and influence of Sir Charles Lyell as a scientist and researcher during his time. It serves as a reminder of his lasting impact on the fields of geology and evolutionary biology.
