Legionella sp. bacteria, computer artwork
Legionella sp. bacterium, computer artwork. This Gram-negative flagellated bacterium is the cause of legionellosis, or Legionnaires disease. The bacterium is naturally found in water, and can inhabit reservoirs of water inside buildings, such as in air conditioning systems. The first recorded outbreak of the disease was at an American Legion convention in Philadelphia, USA, in 1976. 34 people died in the outbreak and over 200 required medical treatment. It is from this outbreak that the bacterium takes its name. Infection causes pneumonia and fever, although prompt treatment with antibiotics can effect a complete cure

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer artwork of Legionella sp. bacteria, a Gram-negative flagellated bacterium that is responsible for the development of legionellosis, commonly known as Legionnaires disease. The bacterium naturally resides in water and can thrive in water reservoirs within buildings, including air conditioning systems. Interestingly, this particular bacterium derived its name from the first recorded outbreak of the disease at an American Legion convention held in Philadelphia, USA, back in 1976. During this devastating outbreak, 34 individuals tragically lost their lives while over 200 others required medical treatment. When infected with Legionella sp. , individuals experience symptoms such as pneumonia and fever. However, with prompt administration of antibiotics, complete recovery is possible. The intricate illustration not only highlights the biology and medicine behind this pathogenic microbe but also sheds light on its impact as a respiratory illness causing agent. It serves as a reminder to be cautious about potential sources of infection and emphasizes the importance of maintaining clean water systems within our built environments. Displayed by Science Photo Library - renowned for their exceptional collection capturing various aspects of science and nature - this print offers both educational value and aesthetic appeal to those interested in microbiology or seeking knowledge about diseases caused by bacteria like Legionella sp.
