EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph showcases the remarkable Fovant Badges, a collection of regimental badges etched into the chalk hillside on Fovant Down in Wiltshire, UK. Serving as a poignant symbol of remembrance and commemoration, these geoglyphs were meticulously crafted by British Army and Empire soldiers camped nearby before departing for France during World War I. Dating back to 1916, these badges span up to an impressive 50 meters across and hold immense historical significance. Eight badges have endured the test of time, while one non-military emblem—the YMCA badge—was allowed to naturally fade away from 2005 onwards. Classified as scheduled monuments, they stand proudly as enduring reminders of sacrifice and valor. From left to right, the surviving badges include those representing the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry, 6th City of London Rifles, Australian Commonwealth Military Forces, Royal Corps of Signals (1970), Wiltshire Regiment (1950), London Rifle Brigade, Post Office Rifles, and the Devonshire Regiment. Capturing both our attention and imagination through this stunning aerial photography by GETMAPPING PLC/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY; it transports us back in time to an era defined by conflict but also bravery. These geoglyphs not only honor those who fought bravely during World War I but also serve as enduring symbols that connect us with our shared history.
