A Margate Hoy
A Margate Hoy, a type of sailing boat often used for freight purposes but in this case one of the boats which in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries would ferry passengers from London along the Thames and then down the Kent coast to enjoy the fresh air and delights of seaside towns such as Margate. They gradually fell into disuse as their role was taken over by steamships, one of which is seen in the background of this illustration, overtaking the Hoy. Date: 1881

EDITORS COMMENTS
A Margate Hoy: A Glimpse into the Past of Seaside Tourism This evocative image captures the essence of a bygone era, as a traditional Margate Hoy sailing boat glides effortlessly along the Kent coastline, leaving a wake of sparkling water behind. The Margate Hoy was a popular type of sailing boat used for transporting passengers from London down the Thames and along the coast to the seaside town of Margate and other Kentish resorts in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The fresh sea air and delights of the seaside were a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life, and the Hoy provided an affordable and enjoyable means of travel for visitors. In this illustration, we see a group of passengers, dressed in their Sunday best, waving farewell to friends and family as they set sail on their adventure. However, the tranquility of the scene is contrasted by the approach of a steamship in the background, heralding the dawn of a new era in transportation. Steamships gradually replaced the Hoys as the primary means of travel, and the traditional boats fell into disuse. This image, dated 1881, provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of seaside tourism and the role that boats like the Margate Hoy played in connecting people with the coast. The combination of the traditional and the modern, the past and the present, creates a sense of nostalgia and wonder, inviting us to imagine the stories and experiences of those who traveled on these boats over a century ago.
