EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning relief frieze, known as the Altar of Domitius Ahenobarbus or the Statue Base of Marcus Antonius Ahenobarbus, showcases the mythological wedding of Poseidon, the Roman god of the sea, and Amphitrite, his consort. The intricately carved marble detail dates back to the 2nd century BC, approximately 150 BC. The scene unfolds on the front panel, where Poseidon and Amphitrite are depicted in a bridal carriage, adorned with elaborate decorations. Two Tritons, sea deities with the lower bodies of fish, pull the carriage, playing musical instruments to celebrate the joyous occasion. Doris, the mother of Amphitrite, is shown carrying two torches to light the procession, adding to the festive atmosphere. Erotes, or Cupids, are also present, adding an element of love and desire to the scene. The intricate carvings on the altar demonstrate the exceptional craftsmanship of ancient Roman art. This masterpiece is currently housed in the Glyptothek in Munich, Germany, a museum dedicated to ancient sculpture. The scene of Poseidon and Amphitrite's wedding is a popular myth in ancient Greek and Roman mythology, often depicted in art and literature as a symbol of the union between land and sea. The altar's intricate details and beautiful imagery continue to captivate and inspire viewers, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of ancient Rome.
