EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph, taken in 1995, captures a nostalgic view of The Dell, the former home of Southampton Football Club located in Southampton, England. The Dell, with its distinctive terraced stands, was a iconic part of the city's footballing history and was the site where many memorable moments were created. At the time of this image, Southampton Football Club was in the midst of a successful run in the Premiership, with Matthew Le Tissier leading the team as a star player. Le Tissier, known for his skillful dribbling and accurate free kicks, was a fan favorite and played a significant role in the team's success during the 1990s. However, the days of The Dell as Southampton's football ground were numbered. In 2001, the team moved to the St Marys Stadium, a modern facility with a larger capacity and better amenities. The Dell, which had been the team's home since 1898, was demolished to make way for residential development. This photograph, from the Aerofilms Collection held by Historic England, provides a unique perspective of The Dell, allowing us to appreciate its layout and architecture one last time. The image also serves as a reminder of the rich footballing history that was once associated with this urban recreational space, and the memories and emotions it evoked for generations of fans.
