Suleiman Pasha, 1847. Born Joseph Anthelme Seve, Suleiman Pasha (1788-1860) was a former officer of the army of Napoleon Bonaparte who converted to Islam and was recruited by the Egyptian army in the 1820s to reform it on European lines.
