Shops in Bank Street, Mexborough, South Yorkshire, 1963. Artist: Michael Walters
Shops in Bank Street, Mexborough, South Yorkshire, 1963. A photograph taken for the property owners. The shops, which include Leathercraft, selling ladies handbags, Davis Royd of Leeds, a Gentlemens outfitter and an unnamed greengrocers all vacated some years ago and a domestic appliance repair shop operated from the site until the late 1990s. The shops were extensively redeveloped at great expense during 2008 and a bar was opened in 2009. After attempts were made to convert the bar to a pole-dancing club, its licence was revoked and the bar subsequently closed

EDITORS COMMENTS
Shops in Bank Street, Mexborough, South Yorkshire, 1963. This photograph by Michael Walters takes us back to a bustling era of retail in the heart of Mexborough. Commissioned by the property owners at the time, this snapshot captures an array of shops that once lined Bank Street. Among them is Leathercraft, a shop specializing in ladies handbags, Davis Royd of Leeds, a distinguished gentlemen's outfitter, and an unnamed greengrocers. These establishments have long since closed their doors but left behind memories of vibrant commerce. In later years, a domestic appliance repair shop took over the site until its closure in the late 1990s. However, major redevelopment efforts were undertaken in 2008 to transform these premises into something new and exciting. The result was the opening of a bar in 2009 which sought to breathe fresh life into this historic location. Unfortunately, attempts to convert it into a pole-dancing club led to its license being revoked and subsequent closure. Nevertheless, this photograph serves as both a nostalgic reminder of days gone by and testament to the ever-changing nature of our urban landscapes. It encapsulates not just buildings but also stories - tales woven through generations within these walls. Thanks to Michael Walters' keen eye for detail and composition expertise captured here with monochrome mastery - we can now cherish this moment frozen in time forever.
