The Old Church of St. James, Clerkenwell, (c1872). Creator: Unknown
The Old Church of St. James, Clerkenwell, (c1872). St James Clerkenwell in London was founded in the 12th century as the church of the nunnery of St Mary. The building seen here was a mix of 17th and 18th century additions in various styles grafted onto the remains of the medieval nunnery church. It was taken down to make way for a new church in 1788. From Old and New London, Vol. II: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, and Its Places, by Walter Thornbury. [Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. London, Paris & New York]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Old Church of St. James, Clerkenwell (c1872) stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural evolution of London's religious landmarks. Originally founded in the 12th century as part of the nunnery of St Mary, this church underwent numerous transformations over the centuries. The captivating print captures a glimpse into the past, showcasing a unique blend of 17th and 18th-century additions that were integrated with remnants from the medieval nunnery church. The amalgamation of different styles creates an intriguing visual tapestry that speaks to the diverse influences shaping British architecture during this period. Sadly, this remarkable structure was eventually dismantled in 1788 to make way for a new church. However, thanks to photographs like these and historical accounts such as Walter Thornbury's 'Old and New London, ' we can still appreciate its grandeur today. This image serves as a window into another era—a time when religion played an integral role in society. It invites us to contemplate not only the physical beauty of St James Clerkenwell but also its significance within both local communities and wider British history. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded that our built heritage is not simply about bricks and mortar; it is about preserving stories, memories, and connections to our past.
