EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the portrait of Lieutenant Frederick Hugh Sherston Roberts, a distinguished British soldier from the late 1890s. The image was taken in 1901 by Chancellor, featured in "The Life and Deeds of Earl Roberts" by J. Maclaren Cobban. Lieutenant Roberts, born in 1872 as the son of Field Marshal Lord Frederick Sleigh Roberts, played a significant role during the Second Boer War in South Africa. Tragically, he lost his life during the Battle of Colenso in 1899 but was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his heroic actions. In this photograph, Lieutenant Roberts is seen dressed in military attire adorned with an aiguillette and gold braid. His dignified expression reflects both his bravery on the battlefield and his noble lineage as Baron Roberts of Kandahar and Waterford. As we delve into history through this poignant image, we are reminded of Lieutenant Frederick Hugh Sherston Robert's sacrifice for Britain during one of its most challenging conflicts. This photo serves as a testament to his courage and dedication to duty.
