Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of Henry II of England
Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of Henry II of England. Eleanor (1122-1204) was one of the most powerful figures in 12th century Europe. She married Louis VII of France and accompanied him on the Second Crusade. After Louis became jealous of her and had the marriage annulled, Eleanor married the future Henry II of England in 1152. She bore Henry five sons, two of whom, Richard I and King John, went on to rule England. Henry believed Eleanor to have been involved in her sons rebellion against him in 1173 and had her confined until his death in 1189. She was actively involved in governing the kingdom in Richard Is absence in the Holy Land on the Third Crusade and secured his release from Austria by ransom. She remained politically active during Johns reign before retiring to end her days at Fontevrault Abbey

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Eleanor of Aquitaine, the remarkable Queen of Henry II of England. Eleanor, a prominent figure in 12th century Europe, possessed immense power and influence. Her journey began when she married Louis VII of France and joined him on the Second Crusade. However, their marriage was annulled due to Louis' jealousy, leading Eleanor to wed the future King Henry II of England in 1152. Eleanor's union with Henry resulted in five sons, two of whom would go on to rule England: Richard I and King John. Unfortunately, her husband suspected her involvement in their rebellion against him in 1173 and had her confined until his death in 1189. Despite these challenges, Eleanor remained resilient and actively participated in governing the kingdom during Richard I's absence on the Third Crusade. She even secured his release from Austria through ransom. Throughout John's reign as king, she continued to be politically engaged before eventually retiring at Fontevrault Abbey. This colorized portrait beautifully captures Eleanor's regal presence with her medieval dress adorned by plaits woven into her hair. As a symbol of power and royalty during the Middle Ages, this engraving immortalizes Queen Eleanor as an influential sovereign who navigated complex political landscapes between England and France.
